Yesterday Andre the Giant, our beloved and hard working 28 Terrabyte shared storage almost died on us and was admitted to the icu.
Fatal organs were harmed and he probably wont stand an other week. His brother Medea took over the challenging task of serving our bits.
To honor our beloved friend we are building a bigger, better and faster successor. Please help us honoring Andre by giving his decedent a worthy name at our facebook page that reminds us of the spirit of Andre the Giant.

For this specific animated typeface 110 talented animators from all over the world contributed. Our own João contributed with the letter “r”. The result of this world wide collaboration is a wide variety of styles and techniques. The color palette and letterforms tie it all together.

Wow! The ST. Girls Show was amazing! We still have colourful memories of the cotton candy, italian shaved ice, goodie bags and cute little model girls walking (and some running) on the glittery catwalk. Probably for the first time the front row was not filled with famous fashion professionals, but cute little fashionistas.

Together with artist Kustaa Saksi and production partner Hadimassa we created visuals around the three themes of the sunny Hawaii inspired collection: Water Princess, Birds of Paradise and Surf Diva.

Panna’s en Akka’s vertelt het verhaal van straatvoetbal. Op uitnodiging van Imagine IC maakt fotograaf Guus Dubbelman een serie straatvoetbalfoto’s voor de expositie Panna’s en Akka’s.

Voor Panna’s en Akka’s stapt Dubbelman in het leven van straatvoetballers als Edward van Gils, Nabil Akaazoun en Rocky Hehakaija. Dubbelman is in Nederland bij een groot publiek bekend als sportfotograaf voor De Volkskrant.

Straatvoetballers vinden op pleintjes de allernieuwste tricks uit, maar ook regels voor het spel en voor de omgang met elkaar. Deze regels blijven niet op de pleintjes, maar gaan met de voetballers mee naar huis, naar school en het werk. Zo delen steeds meer mensen de taal en de codes van de straat en inspireren zij de samenleving van morgen.

‘I am just trying to be nice’ is a book about the work of Nug. Published as a very limited edition first run. This exclusive publication comes with a one of a kind book cover Nug made from a new piece of his work cut to pieces. Every single copy has a unique cover made by the artist.

The book will be released during his exhibition at Unruly Gallery on the 26th of april.
Nug will be painting and signing 70 books, making each copy a unique piece, available on opening night only, for €40. The first 10 people to purchase a book get an original vinyl record with Nug’s soundtrack.

Our friends at UNDOG – notorious for creating unorthodox and challenging visual communications – created a clean, subtle and at the same time an equally rough and raw design for the 64 page book containing the first true overview of Nug’s work: from exhibitions to graffiti pictures, video stills and paintings, it’s all here, all Nug, in all overwhelming intensity. This release is a collectors item for book lovers, graffiti haters and opinionated people.

For the occasion, Unruly Gallery asked former Dutch Minister of Culture, Hedy d’Ancona to comment on Nug’s work and the controversy surrounding it:

“A Minister of Culture is allowed to think a lot of things about about art and culture. That it should tempt people to watch or listen to it. That it should be relevant to society. That it should be critical; encourage change. But beautiful or ugly? Fortunately, that’s not up to the Minister to decide.” – Hedy d’Ancona (former Minister of Culture, Netherlands)

Nug is a well known name in the graffiti scene. Apart from taking trains and walls on, he’s also created many controversial exhibitions, video’s and paintings. Some define his Works as plain vandalism, others clearly think this is what art is about. These strong opinionated differences even made it into the Swedish parliament and has kept many international art critics included in the debate.

Trying to sum up a festival like SXSW is a bit like trying to describe human nature in just a couple of sentences.

And after nearly a week at Austin’s SXSW festival, We feel like we’ve seen almost nothing!
We went to some lectures about interactivity and storytelling, watched several engrossing panels, checked out the dutchfellows booth, networked, wined and dined at the lovely food stands. Created some visuals for a party and did some VJing.

And yet we’ve probably really seen only about 1 percent of what this oversized event has to offer.

But does that worry me? Not a bit! We will meet next year! See you next time to discover the unexpected and unknown.

It probably has to do with our name that we keep moving through town and can go anywhere, stay as long or short as we or our clients desire, and perform rain or shine. Come and see the new and improved Circus Family studio at the Sint Pieterspoortsteeg 19. Right in the heart of Amsterdam.

The Adobe User Group is the largest community of creative professionals in the Netherlands, an association with 6,000 members. Each year the Adobe User Group organizes six to eight meetings where professionals and agencies show their best work to provide knowledge and inspiration.

A huge 360° projection mapping project commissioned by Scotch&Soda for the launch of their Spring Summer 2013 collection. Located in the monumental Gashouder venue in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The architecture of this building gave us the ideal canvas to set up this immersive projection. Together with production partners House of Orange and Jurlights the space was transformed to a minimal industrial screening theatre where the content was shown all around. Projected straight onto the walls. The audience was standing in the middle of this huge arena.

The last few weeks we’ve been working with Scotch&Soda for what seems like their best Spring Summer collection show ever.
We were given the task to create a huge 20 minutes 360° projection mapping show. You can read all about it in the case study.

A week before the event Peejee thought it would be a nice idea to record a panorama video to get a freaking nice 360 degrees interactive impression of the event.
After contacting two 360 degrees video solution providers for an estimate, nothing really happened from their side and time was ticking. Having a dozen of Gopro cameras lying around in our studio we started thinking; how hard can it be to create a 360 video, its just a moving photo right? A weekend project was born.

Before the GoPro was invented we already had a crush on small camera’s

For this setup we used 6 of our GoPro Hero2 cameras. It was the perfect tool, both in accessibility and usability.
We needed something to mount the cameras on. Mac Gyver style. We took a spray can. Fixed some gaffer tape onto it. Mounted the Gopro’s with a tight rubber band. Recorded a test video on a trolly in our studio. Imported the footage into Final Cut Pro. Synced the tracks. Exported them to several image sequences. Renamed the sequences with a better finder renamer. Then stitched the frames as a batch together with PTgui. Waited and waited a little bit more, untill we had one big image sequence from witch we created a movie in qt. And there it was!! Our first 360 video as one big flat file.

Since projections are mainly staged in dark environments and photo stitching software needs to have reference points where it can see and recognize those points. Dark pixels look all the same. So this trick probably would not work on recordings shot in the dark. We had a working setup and workflow that probably would not work for the projection mapping with non visible reference points, in a complete dark environment with constant changing light intensity.

There was only one way to find out. At the end the final result looks good and it works, but we needed our friend After Effects to help us out aligning the 6 camera’s into one panorama.

Next project: a 3D printed 360 mount for the GoPro’s

Our stop motion guru and master compositor Maurits Venekamp directed the latest Sinterklaas commercial for HEMA. Creative direction by Doom&Dickson: John De Vries (Art) & Rene Verbong (copy).

Circus Family collaborated with Museumnacht, Dansmakers, EYE film institute and Beamsystems for the opening ceremony of N8 2012. The dance performance Supernova #3 was supported by visuals projected onto the windows and ceiling to accentuate the architecture of the EYE film institute and celebrate the start of the annual museumnacht event.

Ok Time to party! Mark October 20th! The huge all nighter dubstep and drum ‘n’ bass event ‘Together’ in the Heineken Music Hall. During the seventeenth edition of the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) one of the best line up with dj sets from Chase & Status, NERO, Sub Focus, Noisia, Feed Me and Major Look.

Brikki is a lion who experiences adventures kids come up with.
All Brikki stories are created and narrated by kids. The Brikki App is already a hit in the iTunes store and Brikki wanted to know if he could also tell his stories on TV.

Here we present Brikki’s TV pilot, it is a test to see if Brikki on TV is fun ;).

For one night only, on Saturday 3 November, more than 50 museums and cultural institutions, will open their doors for a late night of entertainment, discovery and adventure. 2012 marks the thirteenth and biggest Amsterdam Museum Night and this year’s programme is the most diverse yet.

Traditionally, the Museum Night starts with a spectacular opening performance. EYE, the new film museum on the IJ, will represents the setting for the official opening of the Museum Night with the performance ‘Supernova # 3’

For the performance ‘Supernova # 3’ choreographer Gabriella Maiorino and Circus Family will collaborate to make a bridge between the interaction of the audience, dancers, projections and architecture.

This interaction illustrates the active role visitors play in museums, especially the Museum Night. It brings the richness of museums close and is literally tangible for the public.

The performance of Supernova # 3 will take place between 18:30 and 19:00, just before the museums open their doors, and is only available to visitors of the Museum Night.

Brief: Radical Openness through open source motion graphics. Welcome to be re-used and remixed.

Motion graphic animations based on colors, patterns and schemes. Project these onto various surfaces which break the light coming from the projector. Think mirrors, glass, water etc. All the moving images we use to build our films are available online as a free download.

Download the rushes used for the session titles created by Circus Family for Session 10: Reframing. These images were created by projecting motion graphics onto a tabletop installation — breaking the visuals and recording them again. The television Program “Taarten van Abel” is awarded with the Honorary Lifetime Achievement Zilveren Nipkowschijf. Siemon de Jong the presenter of the program who is working on his tenth season, exposed in a unique way the problems that children are struggling, and gives it both a smile as a tear. “The children grow up on camera by the confidence that De Jong grants.” according to the jury

After two weeks of building animatics and testing, Circus Family together with director Andre Maat, created this Toyota Prius commercial. Two weeks of preparing, one day shoot and one week of post production resulted in this multi webcam analog animated commercial.

After two weeks of building animatics and testing, Circus Family together with director Andre Maat, created this Toyota Prius commercial. Two weeks of preparing, one day shoot and one week of post production resulted in this multi webcam analog animated commercial.

PICNIC, Europe’s leading platform for the creative industries is organizing it’s six
PICNIC Festival; an annual three-day event that blurs the lines between creativity, science, technology and business to explore new solutions in the spirit of co-creation.

The theme of this year’s festival is “Urban Futures”. In the coming years, the majority of the world’s population will be living in urban settings. Picnic will look at the challenges and new possibilities for creating more livable future cities, with a focus on infrastructure, sustainability, society, design and media.

Circus Family participated in Picnic 2011 by creating the visuals for the amazing line-up of speakers ready to share their vision for Urban Futures.

The idents are Circus Family’s interpretation of our urban future captured at 25 frames a second.
We wanted to combine all assets from Geoffrey West mathematics, Urban planning, architecture, structure, and our own reflection of our environment that make an urban environment vivid and vibrant.
These interpretations resulted in mapping on city shaped styrofoam combined with a mirroring underlayment of self reflection.

For this year’s Dutch Fashion Awards Circus Family teamed up with Jurlights to turn the Presbytery in the Church “de Grote Kerk” in The Hague into an audiovisual experience. To support the five fashion shows of this year’s nominees and to celebrate the boost of innovative Dutch fashion design.

16 projectors helped to give a true 3D, 360 degree projection mapping experience on all sides of the Presbytery. It even included the ceiling and attendees could walk around and feel the Church coming to life.

1 church, 570m2, 16 projectors, 5 hippotizers, 25 million pixels and more than 100k Lumen, to create this perfectly matching 26 meters high projection.

For last week’s Dutch Fashion Awards we created this projection mapping in back of the church.

‘Nalden meets’ is a series of online episodes in which Nalden sits down with different people in their personal habitat . A collaboration between Nalden & Circus Family to tell a story. No dodgy interviews, just honest conversations about ideas, creativity, technology and personal discoveries. Creating stories worth sharing.

On a sunny day Peejee went out with Daniel, Rubby and Bas to a nearby Pool to roughly test the plastic Lomography Diana lenses on a Canon 5D MKII at the Marnix Pool with a Lomography DSLR Lens adapter.

Even though the big sensor of the 5D the full Diana F+ fisheye effect is not captured by the 5D. So next up would be a Letus 35mm adapter or a P+S Technik Mini35 adapter mounted on a Ex-3 or HVX-200 to see if the angle can be made a bit wider.

Dre Urhahn has worked as a journalist (Power Unlimited), copywriter, and art-director and has set up companies specializing in different fields, from event management to television production. He’s currently working with Jeroen Koolhaas as Haas&Hahn on their artistic project; Favela Painting. A journey to bring outrageous works of art to unexpected places, starting with painting enormous murals in the slums of Brazil together with the local youth.

Directors Henk Loorbach and Andre Maat created this video for FOX Retro. Vintage toys play the well known birthday song to celebrate Fox Retro’s first anniversary. Circus stepped in during postproduction to work on grading and animating the end logo.

‚Ķ,Staat Amsterdam designed the Bols Genever Experience installation at the Holland Boulevard Schiphol. This experience shows the story of the cultural heritage of Bols Genever. Circus Family created part of the visuals that are shwon on the LCD’s. First one being a short documentary on the master brewer, explaining where and how the first Genever was created. The second video is part of an interactive installation: a virtual bartender mixes your favorite cocktails.

Niels ‘Shoe’ Meulman is an internationally known artist, graphic designer, and art director from Amsterdam. Shoe revolutionized the art of writing with Calligraffiti, an art form that fuses calligraphy and graffiti. He launched this movement in 2007 with a successful solo exhibition in Amsterdam. Since then, his Calligraffiti pieces (signed NSM) can be seen in various international exhibitions.

Auke invited Peejee to host a stopmotion workshop to last grade primary school kids at Art House Cinema Het Ketelhuis As we like to support a good young and fresh breed of enthusiastic animators we couldn’t let this event silently pass by.

Each stopmotion group with a maximum of 8 kids had 20 minutes to get an introduction class in stopmotion. Offcourse 20 minutes is not that much time to get a proper introduction, but these kids are from a new generation. They picked it up very well and were super enthusiastic. So who knows… maybe in eight to ten years we have a couple of fresh stopmotion animators from Amsterdam!

Nalden meets Niels ‘Shoe’ Meulman is actually the first video in a series of upcoming ‘Nalden Episodes’ in which Nalden sits down with different inspiring people. No dodgy interviews, just honest conversations, small talk or revealing escapades.

In this first video Nalden sits down and talks with the internationally known artist, graphic designer and art director Niels ‘Shoe’ Meulman. Shoe revolutionized the art of writing with Calligraffiti, an art form that fuses calligraphy and graffiti. He launched this movement in 2007 with a successful solo exhibition in Amsterdam. We went to Munich to deliver two kick ass videowalls we created with Edwin. While we were there we could also check out what the Bataleon stand looked like with the 2010 Bataleon team video we did.

On Sunday we were invited to come to The Farm where twenty international riders came together for an invitational Best Trick session at a farm close to Munich, Germany. Check out the movie (not ours ;) here

Amazing tricks went down during the heated session held in a cash-for-tricks mode. For a total purse of €10.000, invited riders including Jed Anderson, Nick Visconti, Louis-Felix Paradis & Marc Swoboda, among others, brought out their best tricks.

Nike 6.0 supported the locals, including teamrider Basti Rittig, in setting up a stunning jib park, made out of natural materials that served as the location for this stunning event.

Job de Wit and Tom Trago were invited to watch some music videos at VPRO’s Afzien

Cinema advertising for Acht, the Belgian quality tv channel. A nice blowup to 35mm film from various NTSC digibeta sources. Make sure to check their identity design as well, developed by Circus in cooperation with Habbekrats.

“Chips With Everything” is an exhibition of works by three innovative Dutch collectives/studios working across the disciplines of digital design, animation, multimedia direction, art direction and art.

Baked Beans, Circus Family and Minivegas are three contemporary Dutch studios based in Amsterdam.

Their work is seen internationally within the commercial sphere, for example on television or as part of brand campaigns, not only in the Netherlands but also in countries around the world where they have won commissions. But, as can be seen from some of the included works, they occasionally cross the floor, veering into the realms of media art and visual art, something that perhaps has a longer tradition within the Netherlands than in the UK.

The Bataleon Remix Project 2010. With original footage taken from the freshest movies of the year. Remixed by Circus into new edits with some fresh tunes.

In total we created 9 rider parts featuring footage by: Pirate Movie Productions, Variety Pack, Autumn Line, Boz Wreck, Ero One, Method TV, Factor Films, Circus Family and many others.

Nike has designed a Nike Football+ Training app. Train with Juventus and learn signature moves from Fernando Torres.

This T90 MASTER ACCURACY retail video is playing in Nike stores around the world and online at nikefootball.com. We shot the locker room footage and worked all elements into this animated piece.

We gave the old Zilverfabriek a magical treatment for an event initiated by Ernstige Zaken. Using various video mapping techniques the projected images interacted with the architecture of the building. Accentuating and deforming the building’s highlights the viewer immerses into a magical and imaginative atmosphere with growing plants and snow that gets stuck on the rigs of the building.

Peejee was asked to shoot some moody images during the Scotch&Soda photoshoot for the new season. After some initial test shots with the Canon EOS 5D MarkII this was his first official shoot with the 5D. The Camera was perfect for the concept of this project: a touch of a dreamy holiday feeling with a shallow depth of field. This week the Scotch Shrunk 2010 video went online at the Scotch&Soda website

According to this teaser The Bataleon 2010 Remix Project will kick off this christmas. Daily rider parts remixed by circus from the orginal footage will be dropped all the way into 2010…

After checking all the footage the two main editors for this Remix Project got so stoked that they first went on a powder mission to Andermat and Davos, Switzerland instead of starting editing these riders parts. They scored tons of fresh pow and came back fully charged to start editing like machines. It’s almost done now but christmas is closer than we thought. So fingers crossed and keep an eye out for the Bataleon Vimeo channel to see if we will pull through.

Just before summer started we had a roundup for a new intern here at Circus Family.
A lot of different enthusiastic candidates dropped by and showed us their work. Some with customized showreels, DVD boxes or projects that showed their love and devotion to the work they stand for. It was hard to make the decision…

The video in this post was created by our new intern Marlieke. A customized intro created for her showreel DVD when she dropped by for her first meeting. A very nice way of introducing yourself…

So here we are kicking off with Marlieke from the HKU

In June we headed for Barcelona with a minivan filled with equipment. We had two days to get to FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium and setup a studio on location to finalize all audiovisuals we’d been working on for the month prior to departure.

Our mobile studio was set up in the Heart of Camp Nou, where we had a great view on the pitch. If you have to work long days anyhow, better do it here and experience Barça from within and feel the magic of the old stadium.

Overall the event was a big succes. All presentations, visuals and videos took place in and around the stadium: in the press area, the changing rooms, the tunnel and on the pitch.

We carry our sketchbook around wherever we go. Looking for ideas, memories, words and friends to record. They contain our secrets, ideas, notes, drawings, memories & illustrations. Last weekend we moved the turntables and records to a better spot.
And suddenly we got a new resident DJ Nils…. he has a day off today… So he’s getting us some nice and fresh tunes!

Filmed on location in Leiden with a Panasonic P2 camera using a 35 mm film adapter.

Last week we shot a video with the SI-2K Camera , operated by Steffen Haars the output of the camera gave us some verry nice RAW material.

The video is now in post production and will be online next year ;)

The Circus Family needed some more diskspace to allocate all our projects…
So a couple of weeks ago Peejee went out to build a new hardware RAID with a capacity of 14TB.

The RAID needed to be safe and fast, and quickly accessible by everyone on the network…

One of the fastest RAID cards that you could put in your MAC PRO the Areca 1280 , bought two Addonics cases with hard disc bays in it and 20 Hitachi 1Tb discs.

Due to some faulty cables we got a lot off system errors and crashes but with some help of SAS-infiband cables form the states we could finally test the full system.

To test the RAID reliability and performance Peejee made a directors cut of
some of the footage he shot in Ischgl Austria for Protest boardwear last winter.

Now the RAID is up and running and accessible by everyone. With the configuration of two ethernet ports combined (ethernet trunking) the other edit set can also access the same RAID partition with a speed of 200Mb/s.

Animated instore video to introduce the new Nike Pro product: an underlayer to keep the athlete protected and cool or warm depending on circumstances. Nike EMEA Brand Design asked us to create this animation that is built from scratch, using still photography of athletes Cristiano Ronaldo, Didier Drogba and Anouk Hoogendijk.

It’s been played out in ultra wide format at Nike Town’s around the world. The video’s vary from a regular widescreen 1024 × 576 pixels (PAL TV) size up to ultra widescreen 2764 × 768 (5 by 1.3 meter) and is being projected using 3 beamers.

Leader & bumpers for State TV: A weekly show by hip hop magazine State, broadcasted on BNN. Produced in collaboration with HOTEL. All artwork by HOTEL. Animation by Circus.

A series of animations based on the original artwork created by Vincent van de Waal. These were projected as an introduction for the different artists performing that night: LeLe, Beesmunt Soundsystem, Mr. Wix, Daniel Haaksman, Jeugd van Tegenwoordig & Scottie B.

Taco has been adopted to the Circus Family, he is from the HKU in Hilversum and will stay with us until february.
He started two weeks ago, and during his internship he will be focussing on visual effects, animation and motion graphics.

Together with Vinz, who created the logo artwork for Viral radio, we developed the visuals for their first dubstep festival held at the former Club 11 and Het Bimhuis. A great line up including the Bug and the mighty Kode9 made this a worthy monday night. Check the animations over in our work section.

A different perspective for the new TMF program called “STRAATHELDEN”. We couldn’t find anyone to rent us a camera by the time they found out what we were up to. So we got ourselves a brand new one and yes… it’s still working!

Viral Radio hosted a Dubstep festival during the last days of Club11 in Amsterdam. Circus created the animations of the Viral Radio logo designed by Vincent van de Waal. Spread over 12 screens high above Amsterdam, quite impressive and hypnotizing. Same goes for the beat provided by Kode9 (Hyperdub).

Comissioned by Protest Boardwear our cameraman Peejee was sent to the mountains of Austria to shoot the Protest team riders. Loads of powder asked for a quick re edit.

After searching around and doing some production tests we bought the Sony HDR-TG3. You can’t use the slomo, it’s really crap, but the images that come out of this camera stay really good when you put it on a moving object. If the impact is too big it sometimes loses the focus, when it’s on manual. But hey… can you handle 3G in less that 0.1sec 80 times a day =)

We were lucky with the weather the last two days, I even burned my nose =)

Leader and bumpers for TMF Showcase. A new concept by MTV Networks to invite bands into their studio and organize an intimate live performance broadcasted live on dutch television. First up: KANE.

Circus created the artwork and animations. After that we delivered all project files as templates so for future use only a new clip had to be dropped on the timeline and it would come out exactly in the same layout.

It was sweaty and funny but we still don’t really know who was the model for the great 3d whale of their new safe sex campaign…

Alphabet Pictures teamed up with Johan Bograaf to shoot a documentary and a commercial for the 2008 snowboard line of protest. They asked Peejee to shoot the whole thing.

Freshcotton still photography originally shot for their website gets the Circus animation treatment. Freaky morphing technique formed the backdrop on LCD screens during the Bacardi BLive party in Hotel Arena Amsterdam.

A short documentary film showcasing five different 17 year old kids from Italy, the UK, Spain & France talking about their passion for football. Shot by the Circus crew on location in London, Barcelona, Paris and Florence. A combination of full HD & 8mm footage.

Another director’s cut of HET material that was lying around for ages. Originally featured as a part in the first dutch snowboard movie Locations, we felt there was enough footage to squeeze out another edit about the beauty of the mountains in Canada. Sit back and enjoy.

Director’s cut!!!. Comissioned by Protest Boardwear our cameraman Peejee was sent to the mountains of Iran to shoot the Protest team riders. This footage he shot on his 8mm camera as an extra for the Highest Elevation Tour.

VPRO 3VOOR12 Wakker Worden. An early morning show broadcasting loud music to start your day. Circus created the concept, design & animation: promo, leader & bumpers.

Is it stopmotion or not? We couldn’t decide either. A lot of paper and alot of 3d layers later we had the final product. Promo, leader & bumpers for VPRO’s Goud Graven.

Goud Graven is a show about bringing back the classic anthems. Each week a selection made by artists themselves is being broadcasted. They dig in the VPRO archives and come up with their personal favs. Artists such as Underworld, dEUS, Jamie Lidell, Lange Frans, GEM, Voicst & Pete Philly made their selection already.

A compilation of Canon product shots and animations we produced over the last few years, showcasing different techniques we used to highlight new models. Ranging from stop motion photography, macro video footage, stock footage, the use of blue and green screens and even some Milo generated footage. All in-house Circus productions.

Our good friends at Bataleon snowboards won the award for best breakthrough brand of the year 2007. To highlight this achievement we were asked, two days in advance, to come up with a nice edit to spice up the ceremony, we managed to squeeze it in. Yeah for it!

A co-production with Comma.tv resulted in this music video for Krezip. Directed by Maurits Venekamp at Circus and photographer Ruud Baan in a one day studio shoot. Painted instruments and brightly colored plugs did the trick.

It takes a nation of millions to build this shoe. Sweet stop motion animation for Onitsuka Tiger. Commissioned by Amsterdam Worldwide, Circus produced this teaser clip to support the new campaign which included a giant shoe made up of strictly Japanese toys. Used on instore displays and Playstation portables. Shot and animated entirely in-house.

The animation was selected as finalist for the Golden Award in Montreux and eventually took third place.

Launch video for Nike Women Apparel. Shot entirely on location at the NDSM docks in Amsterdam Noord on a Panasonic P2 camera using a 35 mm film adapter. “Step up to Fame” explained in 4 different scenes.

Production company 100% Halal asked us to help out with some visual effects for a series of three commercials for Vice Magazine. Directed by Zoeteke Lugthart and shot by Daniel Bouquet, we added some distortion. This one being the meaning of Vice.

Graphic animation for Canon’s Range Spring Collection 2007. This one for their sub-brands: Powershot, EOS, PIXMA and digital Camcorders. Created using still photography and a blue screen then composited and animated. A graphic treatment for each individual sub-brand and a soundtrack that changes slightly as we switch between them.

Canon organised an event at the World Press Photo 2007 exhibition in Amsterdam. We created this animation as an introduction to the presentation.

We had to be careful with these award winning images. The slightest change could result in a wrong interpretation of the photo. The minimal animation form we chose actually worked out really beautifully.

Created for “VISA pour l’image” in 2005, the yearly photojournalism festival in Perpignan, France. We made a total of two short documentaries commissioned by Canon Professional Services:

Hello, meet Martijn Bastiaans our new intern, from the HKU in Hilversum.
He started today, and during his internship he will be focussing on visual effects, animation and motion graphics.
Maurits will be supervising and together they will kickoff with a new Nike project.

Stop motion leader for VPRO’s Taarten van Abel. Piles of candy, some bluescreens and a lot of stills led to this happy animation.

Somehow (we don’t know who registered us) we were selected as finalists for the Golden Award in Montreux with the stop motion animation we did for Onitsuka Tiger assigned by Strawberry frog. As PSYOP with the Coca Cola Happiness Factory commercial as our main opponent we expected nothing.. And if you have seen the Happiness Factory commercial you know that this was a lost battle… For us it felt nice to be one of the finalists next to PSYOP …

This year it was time for our Medea SCSI raid to get some rest…
For our new projects on HD we need more space. So after being used 24/7 for 3 years and still working it was time for a retirement. We were looking for something that we could maintain, expand, alter and configure ourselves, with the same speed and reliability as we were used to.

We started building our own raid systems and after half a year of testing, asking around, more testing and google we came up with our own hardware raid solution.

The Circus Nerds created a new RAID that in total can store 8,5Tb of data…
Yeah.. 420Mb/s a second read an a 350Mb/s write…

Exactly 4 months ago we shot the Canon i-SENSYS printer that is supposed to be more environmentally friendly.
The surroundings around the printer should be on a hill, so at first the plans were to shoot it outside in the woods. But the printer also had to float in mid air. A better solution was to shoot the printer in front of a green screen and create a virtual environment around it. We imitated the sun with a big lamp on a crane.

Nils, Wout and Maurits went to London to see what the documentary and visuals for the Canon Ixus 10 years party we created would look like…

On September 1 we will be moving to a new office. It’s right around the corner from our current one, but it‚Äôs a bit cozier. We can‚Äôt wait. With the new office we‚Äôll have a nice edit room we can actually fit into with clients and enough seats to double the size of the team.

About three year ago we moved into our first office — a few desks inside someone else’s office on an attic, ooogh and with an ugly red carpet on the floor.
We left there after two years and moved to a big shared industrial designed advertising agency styled 600 square meters office. A space we didn’t fit in.

The new office used to be a travel agency and over the course of the last two months we’ve been painting, getting network cables over the place, building desks and getting an edit room in the split ground floor.

We are almost there. Just a couple of weeks away.

Yes, we have outgrown our current office… so we are moving!

The Circus Family went to SONAR in Barcelona…

Last week Peejee was sent out to film for a week in Iran, where he found the best powder of Persia.
